Why do rappers idolize Tony Montana in Scarface?
I just watched Scarface for the first time a few nights ago. I thought the movie overall did a great job of showing the rise and fall of a criminal trying to live his version of the american dream. However, he was kind of an idiot.
******SPOILERS IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT****************************
He built a very shaky drug gang. He constantly got high on his own supply. He did a lot of dirty work like counting his money and trying to kill an influential journalist instead of having people he could trust do it. He killed the only person he could trust (his best friend), because his best friend was going to marry his sister. He then got his sister killed because he was too high to defend his own house against assasins. Oh, and to top it off, he married a coke fiend for a wife (played by Michelle Pfiefer), who does nothing except blow all day long. She’s not even that attractive in the movie.
So what the hell is there to idolize?
I remember reading that Al Pacino took this role specifically to destroy the typecast of being an intelligent, in control leader, like he was in the Godfather.

I think the idolatry comes from the portrayal of Tony as someone who started from nothing and rose to the top. In the thug mindset, I think that where you end up matters less then how far you climb along the way.

ah ok, the rise from nothing makes sense. however, wouldn’t it make more sense to idolize the original godfather (played by deniro/brando)? he rose from nothing to build an empire, and died happy in the garden while playing with his grandson.

not enough bling.

haha, yeah. man, the house was so 80s! especially the ridiculous globe in the fountain and the gold gilded telephones.
