Weekend #3 in the city

Monday, July 31, 2006

This weekend was a great time! I found out that one of my closest friends from middle school and high school just happens to live 13 blocks north of me on the upper west side! Matt is going to Columbia for grad school. We used to be the 1 doubles team at Adams High School in Michigan, and used to kick ass playing ugly and gritty tennis. I also found out that my other friend, Mou who I’ve known since elementary school, and who has gone to school with me for pretty much my whole life (elementary, middle, high, college), is continuing her streak of following me, and she’s going to be in NYC for a year as well! We’re trying to see if me, my cousin, Mou, and her friend Annie can live together in a 4 bedroom somewhere in NYC.

So this saturday me, Matt P (the one interning at Xanga/from UM), Matt K (the one I know from middle school), Brandon (my friend from UM who was visiting from Rhode Island where he’s doing an internship), and Katie (another friend from UM who is working at Goldman Sachs) walked the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a great time, and we got some awesome pizza at Grimaldi’s on the other side (supposedly one of the best places in NYC for pizza). We also went and got some ice cream.

So while we were in line at the ice cream place, Matt P decided to get the Peaches and Cream flavor because it was a pretty rare flavor. One of the two old ladies in front of us turned around and the following conversation ensued:

Old lady: “Are the peaches fresh?”

Matt (in vigorous young man tone of voice): “Well I should hope so!”

At this point I started laughing uncontrollably and was trying to hold it in. Then Matt brought up the fact that one of the toppings was “Wet Walnuts” and wondered whether they were good or not. The old lady then ordered the wet walnuts for her ice cream and informed Matt that they were indeed quite delectable. I seriously think she ordered that topping just because Matt mentioned it. Ridiculous. Here is a picture of the two old ladies:

After that me and Brandon went out with Katie, her friend (and now my friend!) Michelle, Michelle’s roommate Kristen (also my friend now!), and Katie and Michelle’s friend Peter (also friend!).. Michelle, Kristen, and Peter are working in NYC full time, so they’ll be around still when a lot of my friends leave for the summer. Apparently it’s hard to meet people here in the city, which I’m excited to meet other people that will be here for a while. We had a good time after we found a not crowded bar to hang out in. I was surprised that most of the bars so far haven’t had cover, but maybe we’ve been going to the less expensive ones or something. I got some carbombs for a few of us which reminded me of the fun times in San Francisco with Jamie, Joseph, and Jerry.

Today (Sunday), I pretty much did nothing except laundry, buying groceries, and reading. I did go to an awesome resteraunt near my apartment at Amsterdam and 92nd called Mana. The people there were really nice and food was outstanding and not too expensive. I got the samosas for appetizer and then the pasta with a myriad of vegetables cooked with delicious fresh tomatoes and a little ginger. Definitely a good place to take some friends or a date. Anyways, that’s it for now, tomorrow morning I gotta run to work, literally =).
